Indore: One person died and 36 were injured, several of them critically, when a speeding truck carrying around 40 people overturned on the Mundi-Sanawad highway in Khandwa district on Friday. The accident occurred near Dudgaon under Punasa outpost limits.
The deceased was identified as 60-year-old Babulal, a resident of Talwaria village.
Khandwa SP Manoj Rai said that the group was returning after attending a wedding ceremony at Thukra Devla village. Among the injured, 14 are reported to be in critical condition and have been referred to MY Hospital in Indore, while others are undergoing treatment at Khandwa district hospital. Many victims suffered serious head injuries and fractures.
Eyewitness accounts and statements from survivors suggest that two trucks were allegedly racing at the time of the accident. Some locals said that the vehicle collided with another truck, causing the side glass to shatter and the driver to lose control. The vehicle veered off the road and overturned nearly 25 to 30 feet away.
Panic and chaos gripped the accident site as several passengers trapped under the overturned vehicle, started crying for help. Local villagers rushed to the spot and began rescue efforts, pulling out the injured and shifting them to nearby hospitals using private vehicles and ambulances.
Police said the body of the deceased has been sent for postmortem examination.
